Odyssey of the Mind

On Saturday March 1st, 2014, two very dedicated teams represented Bayonet Point Middle School at the Regional competition of Odyssey of the Mind.  Over the past 5 months these teams have worked very hard to think of, plan, create, and display their solution to a long term problem of their choice.

Our 6th grade team chose the problem “The Not-So-Haunted House.” In a very popular division filled with 13 teams, our Patriots placed 5th in their division and we are very proud of them.  The team members are:  Bailey Bova, Carina Nazario, Desiree Hartman, Destiny Vainisi, Anthony Albright, Julia Scales and Caitlin Corlett.  Way to go team!

The 8th grade team chose the “Driver’s Test” problem. I am very proud to announce to you that our team of Patriots won 1st place in their division!  They also received an Omer Award, and a highly prestigious Renatra Fusca award.  This award ensured the team continues on to the State Competition in April.  They will be representing all of us in Orlando, please wish them luck!

The team members are:  Carly Johnson, Cassie Richardson, Leo Hess, Courtney Corlett and Tara Zimmerman.  Congratulations Patriots.

Help us help the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

Our school is thrilled to be participating in The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s School & Youth Programs! Whether it’s Pennies for Patients, Pasta for Pennies presented by Olive Garden, or the LLS High School Program, students last year raised nearly $28 million to fund breakthrough therapies to save the lives of blood cancer patients.

Common Core Community Meetings

Beginning on January 14, the district is holding parent/community meetings to explain the Common Core State Standards at each high school for their feeder pattern schools.  It is important that schools notify families about the meeting for your feeder pattern.  The list of dates and locations is attached, and it is posted on the Common Core webpage.  School administrators, please include the date or a link to the entire list in your next newsletter and on your school website, and make use of social media to spread the word.  District and school staff members also should consider attending the meeting that is most convenient for them.  Below is the press release that went out last week.

Pasco Schools to Hold Information Meetings on New State Standards

Land O’ Lakes, FL – (December 10, 2013) – Pasco County Public Schools has scheduled a series of 13 community meetings starting at Anclote High School on January 14, 2014, to educate parents and the community about Florida’s new standards for k-12 students.
Meetings are scheduled from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at each district high school for parents whose children attend the high schools and the elementary and middle schools that feed into them.  Those who attend will hear a presentation by district experts, receive materials explaining what the Common Core State Standards are and are not, and participate in a question and answer period.
The Florida Board of Education adopted the standards in 2010, and in 2011 schools began implementing curriculum and training teachers to help kindergarten and first grade students master the standards.  The standards will be fully implemented in all grades starting with the 2014-2015 school year.
The meeting schedule is attached.  It also can be viewed by going onto the Pasco Schools homepage,www.pascoschools.org, and clicking on the CCSS link under Quick Links. The Common Core page includes news links and multiple sources of information for students, parents, and the community.
